[Attached doc: School Council Feb 11th]

Teachers report (Louise)

Kinders have been working with Ozobots for doing coding. Scientists in the School have been in junior classes. Spirit week Feb 14-17: Red and white day, hat day, beach day, PJ day. (Kinders may do a reduced spirit week schedule. Check your teacher’s weekly memo.). Finding a way to celebrate kindness month in late February.  “Shout outs,” as a way to recognize the kind things staff or students are doing, are returning to the morning announcements.

Treasurer’s Report (Jay, on behalf of Allison)

Just about $1500 through direct donations.  Signing authority now in place for Jay.

Fundraising activities 2021/22 (Jay on behalf of Crystal)

Topper’s pizza pilot happened last Friday. SWC got 10% of revenue. With 10 families participating from council we raised $30-40.  Families just needed to forward receipt to SWC council email.  Question about whether or not ordering through apps like UBER Eats will be eligible is being looked in to prior to publicizing event.

Kinder teachers have provided a list of toys/tools they are interested in.  Things like Little Tikes trucks, shovels. Wanda will send list to SWC council for distribution/publicity.

Updates on ongoing fundraisers:

FlipGive: Just under $500 raised so far

Toppers Pizza$30 raised from Topper’s fundraiser trial.

Labels from Mabel’s Labels, Oliver’s Labels and Loveable Labels:. $67 check arrived from Mabel’s labels!..

Direct donations:. $1500 raised year to date

Looking forward:

FunNight: What are the chances we might be able to have a Fun Night? Is it worth talking about?  Is there anybody who wants to be the point person to keep track?  Response from Wanda: NO IDEA if it will be possible.  So hard to know what will be allowed by then.  Comments:

Rather than do a pared down version of Fun Night (a large event requiring a LOT of resources to organize), consider bringing back a smaller event, like multicultural night?

Consider having two smaller things to target older and younger kids separately? This would spread out the crowds.

o   Having multiple events is challenging because it might separate siblings and base costs are double which can be expensive.  Starting price tag or Fun Night was around $5000.

Consider discussing again in April when we have more details. ACTION: add Fun Night to April agenda.

Spring clean-up: If we can have an event in the spring to spread mulch, it would be great! The kinder yard desperately needs some!  Money has already been approved in Council’s budget.  We need a date and to figure out a procurement plan.  In the past, it hasn’t been a challenge to get mulch on short notice. Event name: Mulch May Madness!! Details to be confirmed at April meeting. ACTION: add May Mulch Madness to April agenda

Parent Reaching Out (PRO) Grant offered by OCDSB: OCDSB develops a list of topics and speakers for School Councils to choose from. All School Councils will be able to review the list of topics and available dates and identify their preferred session. School Councils will have the opportunity to register for one Virtual Speaker Night. Last year SWC did Scientists in the Schools for up to 60 participants.  Scientists in the Schools is an option again this year

One idea would be to do something about mental health and/or coping

Some families don’t have technology to do these events. Could we consider giving out a Chromebook for the event.

Parent Involvement Grant ($500) is another grant that is offered and focused on engaging parents. We are likely to get this too.

We don’t know details or specifics of all offerings. Discussion of the PRO grant will happen over email before April Council meeting.

Toonie Tuesday:  on Feb 22. Prior to COVID kids would bring in a toonie.  School cash online will be opened for this purpose. Funds go to Education Foundation, which helps support kids and their families.  ‘Progress

Kinder info night: 18 people showed up live to the event! Presentation can be watched online. Lots of kids already registered.
